We’re stoked to announce that Mountain Adventure is once again supporting Skedaddle, one of New Zealand’s fastest-growing trail racing events. After a huge success last year, it’s clear this race has already made its mark on the running scene. With its mix of epic trails, buzzing atmosphere, and strong community vibe, Skedaddle is quickly earning its name as one of the most exciting trail running events in the country.
The courses
Skedaddle is based on the beautiful Island Hills Station in North Canterbury, a working high-country station with privately owned terrain, singletrack that snakes through forest and saddle, river crossings, high ridgelines, and sweeping views of expanse. The event is named after Mt Skedaddle (1,704 m), the highest point on the property.
The event has something for everyone – whether you’re chasing a first finish line or gunning for a serious endurance challenge. The event features a variety of courses that showcase the rugged beauty of the trails. Here are the five race distances on offer — each with its own flavour, challenge, and reward:
- 42 km – Creepers Socks ‘Two Tunner’: The full-marathon beast — ~2000 m of elevation gain, remote terrain, long climbs and descents, narrow single track, historic huts, sweeping views.
- 30 km – Further Faster ‘Wilderbeast’: A solid middle-distance with ~1,300 m of climbing. Technical trail sections, endurance-testing climbs, and pure trail magic.
- 15 km – Leki ‘Dozer Line’: Steep climbs, ridgeline views, and varied terrain — a challenge for those who want more than a casual run.
- 10 km – Happy Hire ‘Humble Dove’: Steady climbs, a loop of single track and farmland, with a downhill finish. Accessible yet still rewarding.
- 4 km – Weaning Muster: A family-friendly adventure for kids and parents alike. Short, scenic, and a great option for the little ones to experience a slice of Island Hills Station.

More than just a race
Skedaddle is about more than trails and finish lines. All money raised goes towards conservation efforts within the Mandamus Reserve. The goal is to improve and enhance the native biodiversity of the 3,200 ha nature park and ultimately, reintroduce Great Spotted Kiwi in collaboration with Save the Kiwi . It’s racing with a purpose – a chance to give back to the very environment that makes the event so special.
