For when it matters: Grivel unveils a new brand identity

Mountain Adventure |

Some brands follow mountain culture. Others help shape it.

For more than 200 years, Grivel  has been shaping the tools that allow climbers, mountaineers, and explorers to move further into the mountains. Now, the iconic Italian brand has unveiled a refined brand identity and a new claim that signals the beginning of an exciting new chapter: For When It Matters.

The new identity reflects a continued evolution in how Grivel expresses what has always defined its equipment in the field. From thoughtful refinements in geometry and construction to ongoing attention to weight, efficiency, stiffness, durability, and precision in key contact points, Grivel continues to build gear trusted in technical terrain around the world.

Importantly, this evolution does not replace what came before. It builds on it. The iconic yellow remains, and Grivel’s heritage is still firmly present. Yet, the new design offers a clearer, sharper more focused expression of what the brand has always stood for: precision, trust, traction, and performance when the stakes are high.

A legacy forged at the foot of Mont Blanc

Grivel’s story began in 1818 in Courmayeur, Italy, at the foot of Mont Blanc. Originally a blacksmith’s workshop producing agricultural tools, the company soon found itself serving a new kind of customer: early mountaineers venturing into the Alps.

Over the decades, Grivel helped shape the evolution of climbing itself. In 1909, Henri Grivel worked with pioneering British alpinist Oscar Eckenstein to produce one of the first modern crampons. Twenty years later, Laurent Grivel introduced the revolutionary front points that transformed steep ice climbing and played a key role in some of the Alps’ most significant ascents.

Today, Grivel remains the oldest mountaineering equipment manufacturer still in existence.

Why it matters

The mountains don’t care about marketing slogans. They care about performance. And Grivel’s new identity is a clear statement of continued purpose.

Here in New Zealand, Grivel gear has long earned its place among climbers, alpine guides, mountaineers, and backcountry adventurers tackling everything from technical ascents in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park to winter missions in the Southern Alps.

With ever changing and often extreme weather conditions, gear choices matter. Whether it’s a trusted pair of crampons biting into hard alpine ice, an ice axe providing security on a steep snow slope, or a carabiner clipped into a critical anchor, Grivel products are relied on for performance where it matters most. That reliability continues unchanged, across both current and upcoming designs.

The next chapter

What’s particularly exciting is that this is not a brand reinventing itself. It is a brand refining and strengthening its identity. The new identity strips away distractions and puts the focus squarely on what Grivel does best: creating precision mountain tools forged through generations of experience and tested in some of the harshest terrain on earth.

And that’s good news for New Zealand adventurers, as the same heritage, craftsmanship, and mountain credibility that have defined Grivel for over two centuries remain at the core, now expressed with even greater clarity. Keep an eye out for the new arrivals with our stockists and in our webshop  .

From the glaciers of Mont Blanc to the peaks of Aoraki, the story remains consistent. Trust your gear. Trust your skills. And when the moment comes, rely on equipment built for when it matters most.
