Every October, the Port Hills come alive with one of New Zealand’s most scenic and spirited trail events: the Crater Rim Ultra. The Crater Rim Ultra isn’t just another trail race—it’s one of Canterbury’s most iconic running events. On Sunday, 19 October 2025, runners from across Aotearoa will gather in Christchurch to tackle Diamond Harbour, Mount Herbert and the Port Hills, chase jaw-dropping views, and soak up the electric atmosphere that makes this event so special.
If you’ve been waiting for the right time to join in—this is it. Some distances are already gone, but there are still spots left for those who want to experience the magic.
What’s still open
The ultra-long distances may have sold out, but that doesn’t mean you’ve missed your chance. Three great events are ready and waiting for you:
-
22 km Kiwi Challenge
A race that lives up to its name. The Kiwi Challenge takes you up to the iconic Sign of the Kiwi and back, with sweeping views over Christchurch and Lyttleton Harbour. It’s a challenging, rewarding distance that’s filling up quickly—so don’t hang about if this is the one calling your name. -
12 km Rapaki Rumble
A spirited climb followed by those ridge-line panoramas that make the Crater Rim Ultra famous. Perfect if you’re testing your speed, stepping up from road running, or simply looking for a trail run that fits neatly into your Sunday 😉. -
6 km Valley View
Don’t let the short distance fool you—this one packs in plenty of scenery. Whether it’s your very first trail race, a fun jog with friends, or a family day out, the Valley View is all about joy on the trails.
What’s sold out
- 30 km Bellbird Buster
- 53 km Crater Rim Ultra
So if you’re eyeing the 22 km, 12 km, or 6 km, it’s time to lock it in!
Last race recce: build the hype
One of the best parts of the Crater Rim Ultra is the chance to preview the trails before race day. The fourth and final recce is the perfect opportunity to meet fellow runners, get a feel for the terrain, soak up the event buzz ahead of October, and even test out LEKI demo poles—we’ll have a tent full of them ready for you at the bottom of the track.
Recce #4, is set for Sunday, 5 October at Christchurch Adventure Park. Think of it as your warm-up party: no pressure, just community, fun, and a taste of what’s to come.
Don’t miss out
With two distances already gone and the 22 km Kiwi Challenge nearly full, now’s the moment to decide. Whether you want a serious test of endurance, a punchy climb, or a fun and scenic outing, there’s still a trail with your name on it.
See you on the rim!
