KIMBERLEY GIBBONS-HURINUI

It’s not unusual that the most amazing athletes are shaped by a tumultuous life,
and Kimberley’s story shows how movement and exercise can spark a remarkable transformation
and help find a new path forward.

Growing up in an active family, she enjoyed swimming and playing netball from a young age, but life took her on a challenging path in her twenties. Through mental health struggles, addiction, and even some time in home detention, Kimberley faced hardships that could have broken most people. Yet it was through these trials that she discovered the power of movement, setting the foundation for her return to health and self-belief.

A fresh start

Kimberley’s first running milestone came in 2019 - a half marathon in Mount Maunganui to celebrate her regained freedom, surrounded by family. A few years later, she found her trail running home with The Speed Freaks community, where her passion for the sport began to thrive. Despite setbacks, including a six-month Achilles injury, she also embraced strength training, discovering a love for lifting that culminated in her first body building competition in 2023. That moment, standing on stage after a year of preparation and a 20-week diet,
marked a personal triumph over fear and self doubt.

A powerful reminder

For Kimberley, training is about more than fitness—it’s a daily reminder of fun and resilience. She balances endurance running, gym sessions, and Hyrox training with a pragmatic approach to nutrition, hydration, and recovery, often turning to FIXX Nutrition to fuel and sustain her heavy training days. Whether chasing trail milestones, lifting heavier,
or exploring the outdoors with whānau, her journey serves as a powerful reminder that
consistent efforts shape extraordinary results.
