DAVID HAUNSCHMIDT

David is an emergency medicine doctor, runner, triathlete and endurance coach.
There are not many trail races in New Zealand where he hasn't been on the podium or set a course record.
Originally from a small island in the north of Scotland, David came to New Zealand back in 2016.
After walking many of the trails, he found the joy of running them instead and it wasn’t long before he started signing up for trail running events.

"I've always loved pushing myself to see what I am capable of, getting to do this whilst exploring new locations is the best way to spend a day.
It's fantastic having events that showcase and celebrate these areas and trails, as well as the awesome running community.”

The Next Adventure

Currently based in Wellington surrounded by hills and trails, David is always on the lookout for the next adventure. Exploring new places is a major motivation, as he loves everything from the big events like UTMB finals and Ironman World Championships, to small grassroots events loved by the local community.

David also coaches other athletes. “I’ve learnt a lot over the years on how best to optimise training amongst sporadic shift patterns and long working days.
It’s a balance of fitness, nutrition, sleep, recovery and efficient use of time, whilst enjoying the process day-to-day. I enjoy helping people navigate this to achieve their goals.”

Learn and Improve

Coming from a background in medicine, David relies on science to make evidence-based decisions about training.
With limited time, he emphasizes the importance of smart and efficient training, explaining that he’s constantly looking to learn
and improve and enjoys seeing the continuous progress in the endurance world.
