New in stock: best in class stability with the new generation of Deuter Aircontact Core backpacks

Mountain Adventure |

When late autumn rolls into winter here in Aotearoa, the mountains start showing their teeth. River crossings get more challenging, ridgelines wetter, and those long days in the backcountry suddenly demand a whole lot more from both you and your gear. Extra layers, rain protection, winter food loads and unpredictable alpine weather quickly add weight to your pack and comfort and stability become absolutely crucial.

As we welcome these conditions, we also welcome Deuter’s new Aircontact Core series. Built for heavy loads, rough tracks and big days deep in the hills, the updated generation brings a more refined fit, improved movement and even better carrying comfort for winter adventures across New Zealand’s backcountry.

Importantly, the Aircontact Core is not an entirely new backpack line. The Aircontact Core already existed as part of Deuter’s trekking range. What Deuter has now released is an updated generation of the Aircontact Core, featuring a redesigned harness and back system, refined ergonomics and several modern comfort upgrades aimed at long distance trekking and heavy load carrying.

Let’s unpack what has changed and why it’s awesome.

What’s new in the updated Aircontact Core?

The latest Aircontact Core keeps the dependable DNA that made the previous version popular among trekkers but introduces a completely revised carrying system focused on better fit, stability and ventilation.

VariClick back length adjustment

One of the biggest updates is the introduction of Deuter’s new VariClick adjustment system. The new system allows users to fine tune the back length through a simple five stage mechanism with a secure audible click.

This means:

• Faster and easier setup

• More precise torso adjustment

• Improved weight distribution

• Easier sharing between different users

Because the adjustment originates from the centre of the pack, the fit stays symmetrical and balanced across the harness system. A properly adjusted trekking pack can make the difference between moving efficiently all day or counting down every painful kilometre.

New Active Balance shoulder straps

The updated Aircontact Core also introduces redesigned Active Balance shoulder straps. Unlike the previous harness setup, the new pivoting shoulder panel moves more independently with your body and works together with the VariFlex hip fins for improved load stability.

On uneven terrain, steep climbs or technical descents, the pack moves more naturally with your stride instead of pulling against it. The result is greater freedom of movement and reduced fatigue during long days under load.

Improved load transfer and stability

The new generation continues to use Deuter’s proven aluminium Y frame construction, designed to keep the load stable and close to your centre of gravity. Combined with the ECL hip fin system and VariFlex hip belt, the majority of the pack weight is transferred efficiently onto the hips where it belongs.

For multi day trekking and expedition style loads, this level of support is essential rather than optional.

Better ventilation and comfort

Deuter’s Aircontact system has always focused on balancing cushioning and ventilation. The updated Aircontact Core improves this further with breathable Air Spacer mesh integrated into the back system. This enhances airflow and moisture management during warm weather, long climbs or demanding backcountry missions.

Refined features and organisation

The new generation also introduces several practical refinements including:

• Two spacious zippered hip belt pockets
• Adjustable stabiliser straps with dual anchor positions
• Large U-shaped front zipper access
• Hydration system compatibility
• Height adjustable lid
• Included rain cover
• Separate bottom compartment for sleeping gear

And our personal favourite feature…

The updated Deuter Aircontact Core now includes a clever bottle holder integrated into a hip pocket, designed to keep hydration easily accessible while you’re on the move. It’s a small but very practical upgrade that adds that awesome “grab and go” convenience, and we’re absolutely loving it.

These details make life on the trail noticeably easier when living out of your pack for days at a time.

More sustainable construction

Like much of Deuter’s latest range, the updated Aircontact Core uses recycled materials and PFAS free production methods while maintaining the durability expected from a serious trekking pack. The series also carries recognised sustainability certifications including bluesign® and Green Button standards.

Which Aircontact Core is right for your adventure?

Choosing the right size depends on the length of your trip, the gear you carry and the season.

2 to 4 day trips

  • Deuter Aircontact Core 50+10
  • Deuter Aircontact Core 45+10 SL

These are excellent all rounders for hut to hut missions, lighter camping setups and shoulder season trips. The expandable collar gives you flexibility without committing to a larger pack.

The SL versions are specifically designed for a shorter back length and different shoulder geometry, offering a more precise fit for many women or smaller framed adventurers.

4 to 7+ day treks

• Aircontact Core 60+10
• Aircontact Core 55+10 SL
• Aircontact Core 65+10 SL

Ideal for longer backcountry journeys where you carry a full sleep system, cooking gear and extra layers. These models strike a strong balance between volume and manageability.

Extended or gear heavy expeditions

  • Deuter Aircontact Core 70+10

Built for winter trips, remote expeditions and extended backcountry travel where additional food, technical equipment or cold weather gear increases overall pack volume.

Comfort and control all year round

Winter and shoulder season adventures place extra demands on both the body and the gear you carry. Heavier loads, colder temperatures and rapidly changing conditions make backpack comfort and stability absolutely crucial over long days on the trail.

The new generation of the Deuter Aircontact Core series will feel right at home on frosty alpine starts, rain soaked ridgelines, remote valleys and demanding multi day missions where reliability matters. It is for those who keep moving long after the temperatures drop and the tracks become quieter.

If you appreciated the previous Aircontact Core for its durability and carrying comfort, the updated version delivers the same dependable performance with a more refined harness and back system that truly shines when the conditions become tougher. Load it up, dial in the fit and head confidently into the colder months ahead.
