Alastair McDowell is a versatile all round mountain athlete with an impressive background in classical mountaineering, alpinism, rock climbing, trail running, and ski mountaineering. With 16 years of experience, Alastair has explored both New Zealand’s stunning landscapes and international destinations, undertaking expeditions in Alaska, Patagonia, Peru, the European Alps, and the Himalayas. He is known for his preferred fast and light style of climbing, while also delving into big wall and expedition-style ascents.
Notable Climbs
His mountaineering highlights are a testament to his skills and determination. Alastair has achieved the first ascent of Taulliraju (5850m), receiving a Piolet D’Or nomination for the 5-day expedition-style ascent. His notable climbs include summiting Punta Herron in Patagonia, scaling twenty four 3000m peaks in the NZ Alps within 31 days, and completing winter ascents of iconic routes in the European Alps, such as the North Face of Grandes Jorasses and Les Drus. He has also demonstrated remarkable speed on Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn, reaching the summits in just 8.5 hours round trip.
Passion for Running
In addition to his impressive climbing credentials, Alastair has a passion for running, which he integrates into his training and adventures. He prefers to set his own challenges, often in alpine terrain, and has recently achieved several fastest known times (FKTs) in New Zealand. Within six months, he completed the Aoraki/Mt Cook Grand Traverse in 24 hours, the Mt Aspiring return trip in 9 hours, the Arthur's Pass 9-peaks circuit in 14 hours, and the extensive Craigieburn Round in 24 hours.
